Disallowing a Robot
What exactly are spam robots?
You must have heard about ‘bad robots’. Bad robots or spam robots are a special class of algorithms that overloads the network and servers. Presently, there have been no international standard set of rules to write a robot. Being written by human and in lack of any proper set or rules and guidelines, the robots are prone to configuration mistakes.
How can I keep spam robots out of my website?
You can restrict some or all robots, which you do not want, should visit your website. The code to restrict all of them is:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
In case you wan to prevent some specific search engine robots, you will have to replace the asterisk with specific agents (robot’s algorithm) name.
In case you wan to prevent search engine robots to crawl some specific page, you will have to replace the slash (/) with the page URL. Alternatively, you can keep all the files that you don’t want a robot to scan in a directory and disallow the same as follows:
User-Agent: *
Disallow: /norobots/
You can also specify whether page is to be indexed by the robots, or they should follow links, directly in the page through a META tag. If you include a tag like:
META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX"
in your HTML document, that document won't be indexed.
If you do:
META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOFOLLOW"
the links in that document will not be parsed by the robot.
There is no hard & fast rules regarding creation of robots file and one can conveniently do without the same. However, this is a good approach when you do not want to make any particular section of your website public.

Google Guidelines for Dynamic Pages
Now days it has became very common and to some extent necessary for majority website to be dynamic in nature. Especially large websites and portal can’t be build statically as it becomes very difficult and hard to maintain such large static sites. Hence the solution lies with making the website dynamic using Content Management System or otherwise. But the trouble exists with the spiders and crawlers of search engines which find it difficult to understand and read such URLs.
Until few days, Google suggested that - “Don’t use "&id=" as a parameter in your URLs, as we don't include these pages in our index.” This makes sense that not all but Google can read some dynamic URLs and crawls them successfully. Recently Google has re-improved and refined its so called spiders – “GoogleBot” to study and follow such dynamic URLs. This can be concluded from a statement in GoogleBlog that says – “Keep the number of URL parameters to one or two may make it more likely that search engines will crawl your dynamic URLs.”
But the story doesn’t end here. Google has something more to tell – “Keep in mind, however, that dynamic URLs with a large number of parameters may be problematic for search engine crawlers in general, so rewriting dynamic URLs into user-friendly versions is always a good practice when that option is available to you.”
Thus, even if you want to make your dynamic just follow few guidelines to keep it user as well as search engine friendly.
- Avoid using use "&id=" as a parameter in your URLs
- Keep the number of URL parameters to one or two.
- Try to use Rewrite rules to covert your dynamic URLs into static. This will help all search engine spiders (beyond Google) to understand and follow your URLs.
- Now you can upload a dynamically created website, upload it and still sit back in your couch and relax.

According to Google - "A supplemental result is just like a regular web result, except that it's pulled from our supplemental index. We're able to place fewer restraints on sites that we crawl for this supplemental index than we do on sites that are crawled for our main index. For example, the number of parameters in a URL might exclude a site from being crawled for inclusion in our main index; however, it could still be crawled and added to our supplemental index."
Here are some basic techniques suggested by Indian SEO experts to keep you website away from supplemental results. Make sure that you are not using any kind of spam techniques to promote your website. Easy way cannot always be right way. So first get rid of all such spamming if you’re involved. Try to keep you code clean and as simple as possible and make it easier for spiders to crawl. As long as pages are frequently cached your website will not get into supplemental results. Try to keep your web pages W3C certified and HTML/XHTML verified. Improve your back links and in bound links. Make sure that you don’t have any bad neighbors.

Web site designing is not restricted to Photoshop and Fireworks, rather a good website designer must build a superior architecture of the website. Below are few features that a web site designer must take care of while designing a website.
- Do not use browser specific functions, as all users may not have the same browser installed on their machine.
- Use small and less images, if it is mandatory to use bigger images then slice them and keep in mind point 1.
- Always mention the height and width of the images in the code part. It helps browser calculate the space needed to be left for the images and the rest of the page can get downloaded faster.
- Do not forget to put ALT tag on all images, sometimes few images are unable to appear especially if the connection is slow.
- Try to keep the average page size less than 30 KB. On an optimum basis the page should not take longer than 5 sec to download.
- Try to avoid “Mystery Meat Navigation”. Keep your links highlighted so that user at least knows where to click to navigate to other pages. Try to keep navigation easy for users.
- Display the path of the pages on the navigation to help user know where they are.
- Keep the design simple and soothing. Colors that are too bright and too many flashes may distract the users, beyond making your site too slow.
- Do not use too much plug-ins and fancy fonts. Sometimes user may not have installed the fonts you are using on your webpage in that case your page will appear to him in ‘Times New Roman’.
- You can split your page in two or more tables for fast processing. Like you can put header in one table, body in another and footer in the third table. This will help some part of the page (with small table) to download especially with slow connections, inspiring the user to become more patient.
